Bennelong Long Short Equity Management (BLSEM) is a boutique, market neutral asset manager, managing investments on behalf of both fund-of-funds and private investors. The subsidiary was founded as a joint initiative between Bennelong Funds Management (Bennelong) and BLSEM principal, Richard Fish, in 2002.
The team, which has a highly successful track record with in excess of 12 years of strong performance history, invests in long and short large capitalisation Australian shares (primarily S&P/ASX 100).
Richard Fish Director
Richard has extensive experience in financial markets with specialist Australian equities capabilities. He commenced working with the Bennelong Group in 2001 (now known as the Bangarra Group), where he designed, implemented and managed their Long Short Equity Fund, now managing the fund on behalf of Bennelong and external investors.
Prior to this, Richard worked in portfolio manager and dealer roles with National Asset Management Limited. His professional history encompasses positions with high profile investment banks including ANZ McCaughan Securities Limited, Bain Securities (Deutsche Bank AG) and MacNab Clarke & Partners (CS First Boston).
Sam Shepherd Portfolio Manager
Sam Shepherd joined the team in May 2012, bringing with him 24 years of Australian equities experience. Most recently, he was Head of the Melbourne institutional equities desk for Credit Suisse. In this role, he was responsible for research sales, account management and execution. Prior to Credit Suisse, Sam was a sales trader and research salesman at JP Morgan.
His first seven years in the industry were spent at Norwich Investment Management, where he worked as a dealer, analyst and portfolio manager. Sam has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment.
Sam Taylor Head of Research
Sam Taylor has 18 years of broad market experience investing in the Australian equities market. He has worked with the Bennelong Group (now known as Bangarra Group) since 2006, in both an investment analyst and portfolio manager capacity. Over the past decade, Sam has had responsibility for a wide-ranging number of industry sectors and developed a deep understanding of company and sector dynamics for the Bennelong Long Short Equity Fund.
Prior to joining Bennelong, Sam was a Partner at Ocean Financial Group where he was an equity portfolio manager for high net worth individuals and prior to that had investment advisory roles at Hartleys Ltd and Intersuisse Ltd. Sam has a Bachelor of Business (Banking & Finance).
Steven Lambeth Senior Analyst
Steven joined BLSEM as Senior Investment Analyst in August 2014. He has over 14 years’ experience in the funds management industry. Most recently, Steven worked with JCP Investment Partners where he was Senior Investment Analyst, responsible for company research and valuation within a variety of sectors. Steven was also integrally involved in portfolio decision making across a range of investment portfolios, including the JCP 150/50 long short fund.
Prior to this, Steven worked as Senior Investment Manager with Wallara Asset Management and as an Investment Consultant with Towers Perrin’s Asset Consulting Practice.
Justin Hay Senior Analyst
Justin joined the team in August 2016. He has extensive investment management and Australian equities experience as he joins BLSEM from Optimal Fund Management Australia where he was Senior Analyst. In this role, Justin undertook fundamental research on equities, provided portfolio management support and analysed macro-economic factors as a member of the research team for the Optimal Australia Absolute Return Trust.
Prior to this role, Justin worked as Executive Director – Institutional Research Sales with Goldman Sachs Australia. In total, Justin has over 18 years of experience in the securities industry, including six years in London working for Goldman Sachs International.
BLSEM seeks to minimise market risk in the construction of its long/short portfolio by applying a limited market exposure strategy. The team's 'bottom up' fundamental research process aims to identify key drivers of company profitability to generate excess returns for investors.
The fund's investment guidelines include strict frameworks for portfolio construction, exposure limits and risk management.
